Red Dyed Diesel

Question: Is there any problem with running red dyed diesel? I was asking the fuel delivery guy who delivers diesel to our construction site what type of diesel it was that he was putting in my equipment. He told me that it was low sulfer dyed diesel.

If I happen to run some of this diesel in my truck, does any one think that it would cause problems? I dont think it will since this isnt the high sulfer farm diesel. I know you cant run this in the LMM's, what about the LBZ's?

Thanks for your input.

you wont like it when the law gets ya, believe it or not, i just got checked the other day!!!

chances are they will not check ur tank if you get pulled over
its more for big rigs they do it

ur truck shouldnt have any problems with it
but you can get fined big time for it

i run it every now and again if im in the field and low on fuel ill put some in mine. almost every tank of fuel i ran in my cummins was red fuel. you take a chance of getting checked. ive never been checked and no one i know has ever been checked around my area

I run low sulfer in my lbz but it's not dyed. In my opinion it's better for the truck. Your truck will run fine with the dyed just don't get caught.

Thats not true unless my buddy just got lucky. He ran red two tanks before he got checked and passed.

It is no diff. than the low sulphur highway diesel. It;s just dyed. I have never been checked but I have a friend that has. He had a tank in his bed so that is probably why. In Georgia they fine you by the gallon and a full tank will cost you a couple of grand if you get caught. I don't know if it is regulated on a state level or federal.

Red fuel is the same. The only thing that is different is the color. It is dyed for Tax reasons only. Construction equipment, farm equipment, your home furnace is not taxed for highway usage. get caught with it in a street vehicle, you can be in for alot of grief. And dont try playing dumb 'cause they dont excuse ignorance! A guy on another thread said "I'll just refuse them the right to check!" Good luck there. cause you'll be walking back, and the troopers wont be as careful with your vehicle as you would wish. Depending on your location and situation, think if its worth the risk.

If you believe it's made any different, contact me. I need some people to invest in a bridge

And if you have a CDL license you're really screwed!

In Washington a fine of 1 k on each tank and now with the recession infullbloom everyone is looking for more money so we save buying red fuel and they earn catching us
its an old story....
the folks i have heard getting checked in this area are the loggers who have carry tanks in the back of their pick up

the dyed diesel is for off road. we run it in our tractors. combine ect... it has higher levels of sulfur in it. which is actually better for the engine and gives the engine more lubrecation. alot of peoplpe run additives to lube their engine. the dyed already does that. but the environmentallists say the higher sulfer is bad for the envirionment. and the off road diesel doesnt get taxed. becuase we run it in our tractors therefor we dont have to pay tax to use the road. but some people are ruining it for the farmers and running it 24/7. i too have run it in mine. it just depends on which engine if it will smoke more or not. it doesnt change mine but my dads LBZ does smoke more. and yes it does take a few tanks to get the dye out of the tank. :rockin

you are mis-informed about the sulfur level. It's all processed the same.

the Red Dyed Diesel is a Offroad/Marine diesel. Trust me, I know because I clean the tanks they store it in. Do NOT run it in your truck. Because the red dye actually dyes your tank and lines. And if the Diesel inspection starts (which it will) theyll find the red in your lines and tank. Besides I wouldnt do it anyway because its against the law now. Police can take a stick and stick it in your tank and check if it is red. Then ur S.O.L.

hang on a sec. how does it ruin it for the farmers?

around here you will roughly pay around $2500 bucks your first offense in a pickup truck. More in a rig. The NHP has test kits, and recently are now required to gather an actual sample of fuel for the lab. (it has to show so many ppm of dye, so running 1 clean tank of fuel will be good enough). anyway, They used to dip the tank and if it was red that was good enough to write a ticket, and no sample, but in court no lab results put them in a loosing situation. i dont believe the DOT/NHP dip pickups often here though. I never have been checked and never seen any, I have watch plenty of rigs get checked.

I have ran my fair share of red feul. I never run it unless I come into it, What I mean is typically Ill end up with a 55 gal drum of it from time to time, and Ill mix it 50/50 usually. 55 gal of free fuel is hard not to use.

It is the same as normal diesel. I have 250k on my truck including around 200 1/4 mile passes, 50 of which were under 11.70. almost 100% of the fuel has been dyed. no problems at all. Again there is no difference despite what some people might try to make you believe.

Actually there is still quite a bit of Low sulfur Diesel avail being used for dyed fuel. All the dyed fuel I run is LSD. Not ULSD like at the pump...And yes the Low Sulfur Diesel runs a lot better in our trucks.

Also, GM put out a bulletin that it is ok if they find red (dyed) fuel being used in trucks and that is does not void warranty.

this is a good point

there is a difference in fuel sometimes

over time the entire stock of fuel will be the same stuff and only the tax will make a difference in fuel

here in oregon we have LSD and USLD
the pumps are marked
but often even with this we are getting the same fuel

and i dump any oil that is new or clean into the tank to oil things up and clean things up so i am the spoiler and the super clean fuel comes out of the pipe dirty anyway

I want to fool around with natural gas that sounds like fun
and its cleaner!
and faster
and more efficient
so they say

Alot of guy's around here work in coal mines and construction sites. They can get their Dyed fuel free, so most will put a fuel tank in the bed of the truck (the ones you use for site equipment) and actually just plumb it into the truck fuel lines underneath. Then just fill the truck tank with the Legal stuff and VIOLA!
So, unless they pull the fuel straight from the fuel rail there is no way for the fuzz to know....
