Best possible way to delete and go back to stock often

Here is the deal. My 2015 is great. But my mpg sucks and im used to a fast loud truck and a stock lml is neither.

I am not worried at all about losing my warranty.

The big issue. I live in Colorado and we have emissions testing. Every 2 years.

I would ldeally like to delete my truck, and spend an afternoon putting it back to stock, run it on the dyno. and rip it all off again.

Does anyone do this? or have experience? My biggest concern is the DEF tank. That stuff goes bad and fouls everything out. People pull the tank and out it back on and every sensor and pump is bad........

Little help?

Easiest way would be a delete pipe, and leave everything else intact. Could completely drain and clean the Def tank then that way nothing can crystallize in there and you wouldn't have old fluid mixed with new when you do put it back to stock. Hopefully some of the guys that have to do this will chime in shortly

It's easy to drop. Once you did you could clean it out and reinstall it. Once I get off tomorrow I'll see what could be done with it. Mines still go Def in it so that will be interesting to see how it looks lol. Always wanted to turn it into a w/m tank but it will probably just be thrown away

Am I the only one who would even try this?

I wish I was as lucky as everyone else and never had to put it back on.

I kept my LB7 for 6 years. And would have kept it longer if it didn't have so many miles.

I plan on keeping this at least that long. probably 10 year plan with it.

I really don't mind the emissions stuff. I just grew so used to my lb7 with a built tranny and good tunes. that got 17mpg.

I cant have4 this thing getting 9, going slow, and being quiet.

If you want to delete. I would just run dpf delete pipe and leave the stock musket. Then drop/drain/rinse the def tank, and just reinstall when needed that way the def won't crystal in the tank and on all the NOX sensors in the tank.
Also dummy plugs on the dpf and other sensors would keep them from corroding on you.

Have you thought of emission compliant tuning? There may be some noticeable mpg gains with that. I don't know. The sound wouldn't change but you could make the turbo whistlin yourself.

I didn't get any mileage gains with the emissions compliant tuning, but maybe because I was enjoying the new-found power so much. It also didn't make and difference in the frequency of regens either - still at every 200-300 miles.

We have testing here in SE Wisconsin as well. I really loved my deleted '11 but the state is getting so much smarter with their 'random' audits after the test is already passed that I plan to leave my '16 intact. Sure, it doesn't sound or smell like a diesel, and it's slower than my last truck, but I am learning to live with it and after I put some more miles on I can alway do emissions compliment tuning. There are tricks to avoid testing here, like where the truck is registered or for what weight class you have it plated, but they are pretty smart about that too and can flag you for a test even if you don't technically need to take one. Just not worth the cat and mouse game to me anymore.

I just recently learned that the emissions here in Colorado are a visual check to see that the components are present and intact and a visual of the exhaust for opacity. They do not plug into the OBD2 and check anything. The delete turns everything off and you leave it in place. You can hollow out the DPF and re-install the pipe, or get another DPF to hollow out and keep the original on the shelf for if/when you might trade it in at the dealer. In theory your mileage should increase considerably after the delete.

I know that I am planning on doing mine once I get the cash together, kind of broke right now. I am really fed up with the constant regens all of the time; and the stock 'gas' pedal really sucks too.

They do plug in to see if the EGR is in tact. I have dealt with Colorado diesel emission for the past 7 years. They are very strict. and I have yet to find a shop that would just "pass" on visual

This is what I don't understand - You, like my friend has an identical truck to mine, also a 2011, but it's a GMC Denali, both are 2wd and on the same road, driving the same speed he get's 21 mpg when I was getting 14.5 mpg. He goes into regen every 600-700 miles and I before I deleted it was every 200-300. I don't know why there is such a disparity between trucks. Now mine hauls ass while he still chugs along, but now I get 18-19 mpg on the highway at 80-85 mph. For the power mine has, I'll gladly lose a couple of mpg.

It's things like this that make me think that either I had a bad DPF or my injectors were/are leaking between pulses, causing a rich condition. I do blow smoke on hard take-offs and sometimes when I get on it, but by no means am I rolling coal.

I only drive in and around town. Mileage is 12.3-12.8, undeleted. As I stated in my earlier comment, I need to scrape the cash together to delete, I am broke right now. What I didn't include was that I am broke from doing both the CP4 and full set of injectors in the last 4 months, plus other issues here at home.

i passed mass inspection fully deleted...they plugged in and everything, granted i knew the guy who did it but still, he plugged it in.

also, my def fluid drained itself as soon as i started my truck after deleting it.

There are some "lucky" guys out there driving those what we call frequent regen'ers. :wink2:

You're getting about the same mileage as me too. I average around 11-12mpg mixed city/freeway and I just took a road trip from Reno to SLC and back. I averaged 16mpg round trip. I was getting higher until regen kicked in and it dropped about 2mpg when that happened. 16mpg is rediculous when trucks with less technology 10-15 years ago were getting significantly better than that...

I think I have decided to leave it for the next 6 months.

I am too concerned with draining the pee tank and 2 years later finding 2 grand worth of sensors went bad.

I honestly will delete it, and soon. But I need to do some serious digging before I make up my mind.

Nothing else concerns me other than the def sensors and tank.

I'm curious what you plan on doing. I'll be deleting mine in November/December once my warranty is up and I'll be in the same boat except I'll have to smog yearly. I was planning on doing the Flo-Pro "race pipes" and draining the piss tank. I already welded a nicer tip over the stock musket (looks better & retains cooling) and I'll probably be keeping the rest of the stock exhaust in place to make it easy to swap.

Not a bad idea. Keep us posted on what you end up doing.
I'm gonna ride out the 3yr 36k warranty before I delete which will be up by year end. Fortunately as of now I want have to worry about testing.

Yeah I am really not concerned with the warranty. I drive enough the warranty will be up before the given time frame anyway.

I am probably being paranoid. But I heard 2. yes 2. Stories of people trying to put the trucks back to stock and the pee tank, sensors, heater, 9 injector were all bad. One guy had the dealer fix it all and it was like 4800!!!!

I can see how the DEF will ruin it. The stuff dries and Crystalizes so fast, it would really ruin some shit.

OP not sure if I can post this here but there is an interesting review by Rob from ATP and his long term review of his emissions compliant tunes on the duramaxdiesels forum. LML mods and dyno testing begins - Duramax Diesels Forum
around page 10-11.
Seems he has had good luck with them just thought it may give you another option or more info.
Did you get the email from ATP too??

hahah. Thank you I have heard but haven't read anything.

Time to do some reading!
